Home depot return policy explained in simple terms

The Home Depot store has introduced a simple return policy on most items. It is convenient for customers to return items in the store or by email. You can return a majority of items from the Home Depot store within 90 days of the purchase date.

This guide explains the Home Depot store’s return policy, including return periods, the process for returning items, and the refund policy.

Return periods on different items of the Home Depot store

The Home Depot store introduces return periods for different items, such as:

1. 90 days

The majority of items in the store are accepted for return within 90 days of the purchase date. You must present proof of purchase to return the items. However, to prevent abuse, the store will refuse to take the product back if the customer spoils it.

2. 365 days

The customer can return the product within 365 days of the purchase date in the following cases:

  • Items purchased with the Home Depot Pro Xtra credit card
  • Tools that are bought using a Home Depot Consumer Credit Card
  • Things purchased from the commercial account of the store
  • You can return certain trees, roses, perennials, and shrubs for store credit.

Products with return exceptions, return policy exceptions, and online return exceptions cannot be returned to the store.

3. 30 days 

You can return the following products within 30 days of purchase:

  • Tractors and equipment that work on gas
  • Furniture
  • Unused generators in their original packages (Excluding the whole house and stationery generators)
  • Unused paint sprayers in their original packaging
  • Consumer electronics like computers and TVs

4. 48 hours

You can return all the major appliances within 48 hours of purchase. These appliances include dishwashers, refrigerators, ranges, dryers, washers, and certain microwaves.

Non-returnable or non-refundable things

The following things cannot be returned or refunded:

  • Utility trailers
  • Whole House and Stationary generators
  • Custom products
  • Delivery, installation services, and labor
  • Sales of gift cards and store credits
  • Cut flowers and floral arrangement
  • Paint, wallpaper, flooring, and fabric
  • Utility trailers


Customers cannot return custom blinds, but they may be exchanged. Blinds that are Guaranteed to Fit can be quickly returned to the stores. The return limit is four blinds for every household. You can exchange the product for the same product and color. The exchange must be done within 15 days of receipt of the package.

The process to return products to the Home Depot store

You can return the product in 2 ways such as:

1. In-store

You can find any of Home Depot’s nearest stores and return the product free of cost. All you need to do is give a receipt or shipping confirmation email, valid ID proof, and the credit card that you used in the transaction.

Exceptions to in-store return

  • You will need a driver’s license or government-issued photo identification to process non-receipted returns and returns of purchases made with store credits. A third-party verification system processes all returns.
  • Returns without valid proof get store credits returned at the lowest price.
  • A 15% restocking fee is applicable on special order returns or cancellations.

Home Depot Design Center tools can be returned only to the design center. Products purchased online cannot be returned to the design center.

2. Online return

Another method of returning products is through mail. Follow the below steps to return products online through mail:

  • You must visit the official store website and click the option “Return Items.” You can also call the customer care number to return items online.
  • Eligible orders will get a shopping label through email that must be printed and attached to the package.
  • Finally, you have to drop the package off at the nearest UPS access point.

Exceptions to online return

1. Customers will receive a full refund of the original shipping charges if the return is the store’s mistake.

2. The product must be returned with all the components to get a full refund.

3. Items purchased with the help of eStore credit can be returned only in stores.

4. Flammable gases and liquids cannot be returned via mail. They can be returned only to the local stores.

Refund Policy

1. Purchases made with receipt

Items purchased with a valid purchase receipt can be quickly returned for a full refund in the original form, such as cash, credit card, e-wallet, direct credit to the account, and so on. Defective products can be either exchanged or replaced in-store with the same product and return policy period.

2. Purchases made without a receipt

If the customer purchases an item without a receipt, it can be found in the store’s system. Customers who purchase with a debit or credit card can be located within 90 days of purchase. Purchases made by a Home Depot Consumer credit card, Pro Xtra credit card, or commercial account can be located in the system within 365 days of purchase.

3. Purchases made with cash above $1000

Purchases made with money above $1000 will be refunded by check from the Home Depot’s corporate office.

4. Items purchased with a store credit or Gift card

Items purchased with a Store credit or gift card can be refunded in the form of store credit. Customers who buy items with an e-gift card get a refund in the form of an e-gift card to the original email address. Customers must present a valid driver’s license or any other proof of ID upon return.

5. Shipped purchases

In case of a store return error, the original shipping charges will be refunded in full. Items must include all the components for a full refund.

6. Special order returns and cancellations

Special order returns and cancellations will be subject to a 15% restocking fee and should be returned to the same store.
